What Happens If I’m Late And I Come See You?
If you’re overdue and you come see me, I guarantee to keep you out of any trouble. The ATO understand we have reasons why we get behind in our tax returns, whether they’re genuine reasons or just because you’ve been lazy, and they appreciate you coming forward before they have to chase you. As soon as you call you, you’ll have a Registered Tax Agent appointed and you will have no further dealings with the ATO (I’ll face the music for you). If you approach the ATO before they find you, then you’ll stay out of trouble.
Will I Get Fined for Late Tax Returns?
Sometimes you will get a fine for being late, which can be up to $550 per year and even more if it goes to Court. But more often than not the ATO will show lenience if you have been the one to initiate contact and you show remorse for being slack with your taxes. I will negotiate with the ATO to have any penalties waived, and so far my success rate is 100%.
How Much Do Late Tax Returns Cost?
Preparation of late tax returns are charged at the same flat rate of $110, and there is no discount for bulk returns (so please don’t ask). Preparing late tax returns is actually more work because often I’ll have to call the ATO and explain to the why you’re late and how sorry you are and how you will never be late again.
